Waiting For The Sale? You’ve Already Lost, Pal

by Todd Schnick on June 20, 2012

Waiting kills.

Anyone in sales who waits deserves a slow, painful, miserable death.

A guy better than you, faster than you, and smarter than you, is already talking and engaging with that new prospect…

…whilst you sit on your ass and wait.

The world is always moving. People are doing things. Communities are saying things. Dropping clues. Leaving hints. Knee deep in the flow of doing business.

Your competitors are picking up these cues and taking action, or at least talking… whilst you look at your CRM database again, and wonder what is possibly taking that prospect so damn long to review your weeks old proposal.

While you contemplate and wordsmith that perfect email, the guy next door has already set an appointment.

So get off your ass and make something….ANYTHING…happen.

Wannabe authors NEVER get published because they don’t write anything. Future marathoners NEVER run the race because they don’t even run a 5K. Sales aren’t closed because while you were busy crafting the perfect script, the other guy just said “HEY!” to the prospect on LinkedIn.

You can sit around and complain that you have no new leads and prospects, or you can get out in the world, talk to people, stir up dust, and gin up some movement.

I guarantee that even spending an hour talking to real people out in the world, you will stir some opportunity, or at least get some people talking.

Trust me when I tell you, people are lazy. They want things, solutions, opportunities to fall into their lap…

So you might as well get the hell out of your cube and GO INSERT YOURSELF into their world….make them see you, make them know who you are.

It ain’t gonna happen while you hide away from your sales manager and that end-of-month report…

Love this post Todd! I am a huge advocate for doing more and doing more faster, not a huge fan of the “let’s wait for something” mentality.

thanks ralph. you know, now that i think on it, it isn’t ever really about doing it faster. it is just really about doing it. because most others wait, it just seems like you do it faster as a result… you know?

I get the concept…when everyone else is standing still the person crawling will get ahead. Another thought on this involves Newton’s Law’s of Motion (paraphrased) that a body at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted upon. Prospects don’t move forward with our solutions unless we take action. Just my 2 cents worth…

that Newton guy was a smart fellow…
