Well, Twitter works differently for everyone. Use it the way it best suits you. But, just so you know, these are tips that seem pretty universal for most active users…

Best advice I can give? Just be yourself, and engage in real conversations with people…

I must say, I never realized there were such stringent guidlines when it comes to Twitter. I realize these are just your tips, but helpful none the less. Fortunately, I haven’t used and abused any of the afforementioned tips. I am still learning the whole thing!

Thanks Stephanie. I agree with you about when a perfect stranger asks you to RT something. I do, however, find it very appropriate for someone you DO interact with to reach out to you to contribute to and/or RT a post when it is applicable to something you care about.

This is awesome! Great list.

My personal Twitter pet peeves are 2, 3, 6, 7 (more than 10 tweets a day about ANYTHING is annoying), 8, 12, 14…oh and amen on #15! I can’t stand it when someone DMs me a link to their FB or LI page. Send me your Facebook invitation ON FACEBOOK.

And here’s one for you…how about when someone you barely interact with, or worse, don’t know at all, DMs you a link to their shiny new blog post asking you to RT it? #Rude!

Alicia, yeah I am with you. I don’t have a set rule on the ratio of my content to other people’s content. Yet. I just try to push more of other’s content than mine. Brogan says it should be 12 to 1. I hope to someday aspire to that ratio…

Miriam – when I first read your comment, I lol. This, in my judgement is a slight chuckle, as in, “oh, that’s kinda funny!” Now, if I read something that makes me seriously laugh, meaning, you could hear me laughing in the next room, I call that a LOL.

But if I read something that makes me laugh so hard I not only spit up coffee on my monitor, and laugh so hard I generate tears, I am ROFL (rolling on floor laughing).

Just my interpretation. Any other thoughts on this?

And yeah, I agree with you on the RTing thing. Except, of course, when one talks about “restaurants” and stuff…

Love this list Todd! Especially your points about spamming and pushing. One of my unspoken(until now) rules is that for every request I make of my audience, I have at least two comments not related to my business. These can be retweeting other’s information, commenting on someone else’s post, promoting a friends business, etc.
