Be An Intrepid Marketer – Recommendation No. 25
Do you want one word to describe effective marketing?
Storytelling.
I was recently at a workshop where the facilitator did something unique. In making introductions, he gathered the participants into a circle and had each guest tell the story behind their name – instead of just saying their name and what they did for a living and who they worked for.
What resulted was some funny and memorable stuff.
Of course, after each guest told the story about their name, they were asked to say what they did for a living and who their employer was.
After we were done, another guest made an important observation. She indicated that she could remember the story behind each guest’s name – but had ZERO recollection of what they did for a living.
Ah, the magic of storytelling…
The point is, people remember stories. And if they don’t exactly remember the story, they will remember how a story – well told – made them feel. And people buy on emotion. Thus, good storytelling is good marketing.
And a marketing campaign full of good stories helps set you apart from all the clutter. This differentiates you from all the others.
Storytelling illustrates. Makes things easier to understand. Makes it easier to convey value to a prospect. And if a prospect likes the story, they want to help tell their own version to their community. This spreads ideas to a larger group of people.
So, be intrepid by telling people a story. Do NOT simply spew facts and figures about your product or service. How boring…
